In Students, By Students, For Students
Our community-centric organization engages all aspects to fulfill learning potential. Founded just 4 years ago, Math League now regularly serves 100+ students each week and has never wavered from its motto: "To establish and share a community for quality, free mathematical instruction."
Rediscover our past and see our vision for the future below.
Spring 2014: Initial Ideas
The foundation for Pacific Trails Middle School had not yet been laid. With rough groundwork just beginning, the school's administration was situated in two trailers in a nearby parking lot. Within these two trailers, a nearby high school student David W. had a vision for a new Math League in the school. Although the school had not even been built yet, he visited Principal Mary-Anne Nuskin to flush out his goal for a student-led, student-driven, community-centered Math League.
Fall 2015: Beginning
PTMS opened to an initial 200 seventh graders in the Fall of 2015. With Math League as one of just three clubs initially on campus, weekly meetings began within the first month to about 30-40 active students. David teamed up with several of his middle school friends and Kevin R to create a foundation for Math League's future. They developed a complete, 90-page new set of curriculum with the goal of serving PTMS and the wider community. This material is used by several schools, open-source, and available freely on our website.
David now attends Columbia University, and both Daniel as well as Kevin attend MIT.

2015-16 / 16-17 Foundations
Over the course of the 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 years, Math League continued to grow. Throughout its first two year, David and his team laid much of Math League's foundations.
Winter Enrichment: During winter break, students are invited to participate in independent, enrichment sessions to boost their mathematical ability.
Competition Tradition: With a small core of self-motivated seventh graders, PTMS went on to win its first accolades. See our team page for more. Find out which competitions we participate in here.

2017-18 Year
In the 2017-2018 year, Math League's original core of students went on to high school. Nevertheless, in keeping with the community-centric vision, many students returned to continue building Math League. Weekly classes were growing beyond the initial 30-40 students, demanding new changes.
New Classes: In the first major overhaul of Math League's weekly meetings since its inception, then-helper and current President Jeffrey Wang began creating a new set of material. With his brand-new set of "Advanced Level" curriculum, Math League split into two weekly classes, better catering to each student's individual needs.
Targeted Learning: With the addition of new class levels, Math League began towards the goal of "personalizing" learning to each student's level.

2018-2020 + Future
Throughout the school years of 2018-2020, Math League continued to expand on its vision of a community-driven organization, recruiting many former PTMS alumni to help fulfill its mission.
As we continue on our journey forward, we hope to excite not only others but also ourselves in what we do.
